Racism is defined as a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one s own race is superior and has the right to dominate others or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others (Olsen, 2014) While most white Americans acknowledge that racism is a problem in the United States, white people are half as likely as black people to see it as a major problem. Three out of four white Americans say that racism is at least a somewhat serious national problem, compared to nearly nine out of ten black people, as displayed in Figure 1.1. (Moore, 2015) Furthermore, a majority of white respondents say that racism is not really an issue in their own community and don t feel empowered to act upon it, despite recognizing it as a national problem. White people have the privilege of pretending that racism doesn’t exist, or is a relic of the past. Aspects of psychology come into play to promote racial biases, too. Children exhibit a type of bias known as â€Å"in-group† bias, which basically means that we tend to prefer people who are members of groups we also belong to.
